Silent Hill 4: The Room is a psychological survival horror game centered on Henry Townshend, a man who discovers that the front door of his apartment has been chained shut from the inside. After several days of isolation, a mysterious opening appears in his bathroom wall and leads into a series of disturbing worlds connected to unexplained murders and a supernatural ritual.
Although connected to the wider Silent Hill series, the game moves much of the story away from the familiar town and focuses instead on Henry’s apartment, Room 302. The apartment initially acts as a safe location, but its role changes as the story progresses and supernatural events begin invading the one place Henry believed was protected.
How the Gameplay Works
Exploration alternates between Henry’s apartment and hostile worlds reached through supernatural holes. The apartment is viewed mainly from a first-person perspective, while most outside environments use third-person movement and combat. Players search locations for keys, documents, weapons, healing items, and objects needed to solve puzzles.
Henry can use melee weapons and firearms against creatures, although certain ghost enemies cannot be permanently defeated through ordinary attacks. Inventory space is limited, requiring unnecessary items to be stored in the apartment. Later sections also involve protecting another character while supernatural hauntings begin appearing inside Room 302 itself.
