Spelunky is a roguelike platformer built around short but highly unpredictable expeditions through underground caves. Players control an adventurer searching for treasure while avoiding traps, hostile creatures, environmental hazards, and mistakes that can end a run almost instantly.
Levels are procedurally generated but assembled from carefully designed pieces, allowing players to learn how individual traps and enemies behave without knowing exactly how the next stage will be arranged. Nearly every object follows consistent physical rules that can create unexpected chain reactions.
How the Gameplay Works
Players have a limited number of ropes and bombs for creating routes, escaping danger, or reaching valuable treasure. Whips and collectible weapons can defeat enemies, while shops provide equipment such as climbing gloves, jetpacks, weapons, and protective items.
Death normally sends the player back to the beginning, making accumulated knowledge more valuable than permanent upgrades. Hidden areas, secret objectives, and alternate progression paths provide additional challenges for players who master the basic route.
