Steel Century Groove is a rhythm RPG set in a future where enormous machines once created for warfare are now used for competitive dance battles. Players begin as an aspiring mecha pilot and travel through a colorful world looking for opponents, friends, upgrades, and opportunities to become a major name in the dancing scene. Battles can use the game’s original soundtrack or music supplied by the player.
Each machine has its own mechanics rather than functioning as a simple visual replacement for another character. Some build and spend energy, while others introduce drones, cards, or other systems into their rhythm abilities. Mechs can also be leveled, modified, and supported by different backup dancers, creating an RPG progression system around the musical battles.
How the Gameplay Works
During battles, players perform actions in time with the music while selecting abilities from their current mecha’s combat kit. Instead of demanding one predetermined button for every note, the system gives players more control over which ability they activate. This makes battles partly about rhythm accuracy and partly about deciding how to use the machine’s resources and skills.
Outside battles, players can improve their machines, install mods, adjust their supporting team, meet characters, and continue through the story. Custom music can be automatically analyzed for gameplay, while manually created charts and supported osu! formats provide additional options. Arcade Mode offers a faster route into battles with objectives, upgrades, high scores, and increasingly difficult Endless Mode challenges.
