Strategos is a historical real-time tactics wargame focused on large battles from classical antiquity. Rather than controlling small squads, players command armies containing thousands of soldiers drawn from civilizations spanning centuries of ancient warfare. More than a hundred factions and hundreds of different units allow battles involving famous powers as well as smaller armies that are rarely represented in strategy games.
The simulation pays close attention to battlefield behavior rather than reducing combat to basic unit counters. Formations can become disorganized, troops may pursue fleeing enemies without permission, morale can collapse, and terrain can dramatically affect an engagement. Historical battles are available alongside tools for creating speculative clashes between armies that never met in reality.
How the Gameplay Works
Players deploy their army before directing formations across the battlefield in real time. Infantry, cavalry, missile troops, and other units must be placed where their strengths can be used effectively. Flanking, terrain, formation integrity, morale, fatigue, routing, and pursuit can all influence whether a seemingly strong army actually holds together once fighting begins.
Generals also play an important role in command and control. Orders may depend on commanders and couriers rather than instantly reaching every formation, forcing players to anticipate what will happen instead of constantly correcting every movement. Custom battles allow armies and conditions to be configured freely, while historical scenarios recreate conflicts from different periods of the ancient world.
