Stronghold Crusader HD takes the castle-building and real-time strategy formula of Stronghold into the deserts of the medieval Crusades. Players construct fortified settlements, manage food and resources, raise armies, and defend their territory against rival lords. The desert setting changes how settlements develop because fertile land and important resources are often limited.
The game is especially known for its Skirmish Trail, where players face a long series of battles against AI-controlled opponents with different personalities and strategies. Castle construction remains a major part of the experience, allowing walls, towers, gates, traps, and defensive weapons to be arranged in many different ways.
How the Gameplay Works
Each match begins by establishing an economy around the player’s keep. Workers gather wood, stone, iron, and food while additional buildings produce weapons and other supplies. Taxes, food rations, religion, and entertainment can influence popularity, making population management an important part of maintaining a productive castle.
Military forces are recruited once sufficient resources and weapons are available. Players can create archers, spearmen, swordsmen, knights, Arabian units, siege engines, and other forces before attacking enemy castles. Successful assaults often require breaking through walls and towers while protecting troops from defenders positioned inside the fortress.
