The Banner Saga 2 continues directly from the first game’s journey as human and Varl survivors travel through a collapsing world while attempting to stay ahead of the invading Dredge. Previous decisions can carry forward, including major character outcomes that change who leads the caravan and how later events unfold.
The sequel expands the original formula with new characters, enemy types, classes, and tactical possibilities while preserving its emphasis on difficult leadership decisions. Food, morale, population, and interpersonal conflicts remain important throughout the caravan’s dangerous migration.
How the Gameplay Works
Battles use a grid-based turn system where Strength determines both health and attack power while Armor protects units from direct damage. Breaking enemy Armor before committing to stronger attacks is often necessary, especially against heavily protected Dredge.
Between battles, the caravan travels across the landscape and regularly encounters events requiring decisions. Supplies can run out, clansmen may leave or die, and characters can react differently to the player’s leadership. New battlefield obstacles and unit abilities give encounters more variety than in the first game.
