The Evil Within is a third-person survival horror game that follows detective Sebastian Castellanos after a routine investigation turns into a nightmare filled with distorted environments and grotesque creatures. Sebastian and his partners arrive at Beacon Mental Hospital following reports of a violent incident, but the situation quickly becomes far more dangerous than expected. After witnessing a mysterious attack, Sebastian is pulled into a constantly changing world where reality, memory, and hallucination begin to blend together.
The game focuses on survival, limited resources, and tense encounters rather than constant action. Ammunition and healing items can be scarce, encouraging players to avoid unnecessary fights, search environments carefully, and make use of traps or stealth whenever possible. Locations range from abandoned villages and ruined buildings to underground facilities and disturbing interior spaces, with each area introducing new threats, puzzles, and environmental hazards.
How the Gameplay Works
Players control Sebastian from a third-person perspective while exploring dangerous environments, collecting supplies, solving puzzles, and fighting hostile creatures. Firearms such as handguns, shotguns, rifles, and the Agony Crossbow are available, but ammunition must be managed carefully. Stealth can be used to approach certain enemies from behind for silent kills, while running away or hiding may sometimes be safer than entering a direct confrontation.
Environmental traps can be avoided, disarmed for useful parts, or used against enemies during combat. Green Gel collected throughout the game allows Sebastian to improve abilities and weapon performance, including health, stamina, ammunition capacity, and firearm effectiveness. The Agony Crossbow can use different types of bolts with effects such as explosive, freezing, or electrical damage, providing additional tactical options against stronger enemies and groups of creatures.
