We Who Are About To Die is a gladiator roguelite and physics-based fighting game where players begin as an unknown fighter and try to survive long enough to earn wealth, fame, and freedom. Each run represents the career of one gladiator, and death permanently ends that character’s story.
The game focuses on awkward but deliberate physics-driven melee rather than scripted attack animations. Weapon weight, swing direction, stamina, spacing, and armor all influence whether a strike lands effectively.
How the Gameplay Works
Players fight in arenas using swords, spears, axes, shields, and improvised weapons, controlling the direction and power of attacks. Stamina limits repeated swings and blocks, while damaged equipment can become a serious disadvantage.
Between fights, money can be spent on weapons, armor, training, and recovery. Event choices and arena contracts determine risk and reward, with harder battles offering better progression. The goal is to build a gladiator strong enough to survive increasingly brutal matches without becoming too injured to continue. As more of the game opens, physics-based gladiator combat and directional melee attacks become increasingly interconnected. permadeath careers gives players another way to adapt, and weapons, shields, and armor helps turn the later sections into a broader test of everything learned during the earlier stages.
