Age of Wonders is a fantasy turn-based strategy game where players lead a race and powerful hero through a world divided by conflict. Elves, humans, dwarves, orcs, undead creatures, and other factions compete for territory while heroes explore the land, command armies, cast magic, and attempt to capture important cities.
The game mixes empire management with tactical battles, creating a campaign where exploration and military planning are equally important. Different races have their own units and relationships with other peoples, making diplomacy and city control important parts of building a lasting kingdom.
How the Gameplay Works
Players move armies and heroes across a turn-based world map containing settlements, ruins, roads, resources, and hostile creatures. Cities can be captured and used to produce new units, while heroes gain experience and magical abilities. Research provides access to spells that can affect exploration, combat, cities, and enemy armies.
When opposing forces meet, battles move to a tactical map where individual units can be positioned and ordered separately. Terrain, unit abilities, ranged attacks, magic, and numerical strength all influence the outcome. Campaign missions provide story objectives, while standalone scenarios allow more open-ended conquest against computer or human opponents.
