About This Game:
Alan Wake is a psychological action thriller about a successful writer who travels to the small town of Bright Falls with his wife in hopes of escaping a creative block. After she disappears under mysterious circumstances, Alan begins finding pages from a manuscript he does not remember writing, and the events described in those pages start happening around him.
The story unfolds like a television thriller, with episodic chapters, cliffhangers, narrated manuscript pages, and a strong focus on atmosphere. Forests, abandoned buildings, mountain roads, and the surrounding wilderness become increasingly dangerous as a supernatural darkness spreads through the area.
How the Gameplay Works
Most enemies are protected by a dark presence that must be weakened before firearms can damage them properly. Alan uses flashlights and other light sources to burn away this protection before finishing enemies with revolvers, shotguns, rifles, or other weapons. Flashlight batteries and ammunition are limited enough to make resource management important during longer encounters.
Players move between combat, exploration, story sequences, and environmental puzzles while searching for manuscript pages and supplies. Flares, flashbangs, generators, streetlights, and other sources of illumination can provide temporary safety. Dodging at the correct moment helps Alan avoid close-range attacks when several enemies surround him.
