About This Game:
Backbone, now known as Tails Noir, is a post-noir narrative adventure set in a dystopian version of Vancouver populated by anthropomorphic animals. Players take the role of Howard Lotor, a raccoon private investigator whose seemingly ordinary case gradually leads him into a much larger mystery involving powerful figures, hidden secrets, and unsettling events across the city.
The game combines detective fiction with a heavily atmospheric world inspired by noir stories. Streets, apartments, nightclubs, businesses, and underground locations are presented through detailed pixel art, while conversations with the people Howard meets reveal more about both the investigation and the society surrounding him.
How the Gameplay Works
Players guide Howard through side-scrolling environments, speak with characters, inspect objects, gather information, and follow leads connected to his current investigation. Dialogue plays a major role, with different conversation responses allowing Howard to question suspects and learn additional details about the people involved.
Exploration frequently requires searching locations for useful clues or finding a way into restricted areas. Some sections involve stealth and environmental puzzles rather than direct confrontation. The experience remains strongly focused on narrative progression, investigation, character interactions, and discovering what lies behind Howard’s increasingly unusual case.
