About This Game:
Close Combat: The Bloody First follows the U.S. 1st Infantry Division, better known as the Big Red One, through several major campaigns of World War II. The journey begins in North Africa, continues through Sicily, and eventually reaches the fighting in Normandy, giving players a sequence of connected operations across very different environments.
This entry was the first Close Combat game built around the Archon 3D engine, replacing the traditional flat tactical maps with fully three-dimensional terrain. The additional detail allows hills, valleys, villages, ammunition types, projectile behavior, and movement across the battlefield to play a larger role in tactical planning.
How the Gameplay Works
Players command a company-sized American force and issue orders to individual squads, weapon teams, and vehicles during real-time battles. Infantry must move between useful positions, establish fields of fire, suppress enemy defenders, and coordinate with supporting weapons rather than simply rushing directly toward objectives.
Mortars, machine guns, armored cars, tanks, anti-tank guns, artillery, and aircraft can support infantry when available. Troops carry forward through linked engagements, so casualties and battlefield performance can influence later missions. The campaigns move through Tunisia, Sicily, and Normandy while presenting both offensive and defensive tactical situations.
