About This Game:
Close Combat: The Longest Day is a tactical World War II strategy game centered on the Allied invasion of Normandy. It is an expanded rebuild of Close Combat: Invasion Normandy and lets players command either the Allied Expeditionary Force during the D-Day landings or German forces attempting to defend the Atlantic Wall.
The campaign follows the fighting from airborne landings and beach assaults into the battles farther inland. A strategic map connects dozens of tactical locations, allowing results from individual engagements to influence the wider operation instead of treating every battle as an isolated scenario.
How the Gameplay Works
Battles are fought in pausable real time from a top-down perspective. Players give orders to infantry squads, weapon teams, tanks, and other units while taking advantage of buildings, hedgerows, roads, open fields, and defensive positions. Individual soldiers can become exhausted, suppressed, frightened, wounded, or killed during combat.
Between engagements, the larger campaign tracks battlegroups, controlled territory, cohesion, fatigue, and available support. Night fighting introduces limited visibility and lighting effects from explosions, fires, and flares. Players can choose shorter battles and operations or work through the full Normandy Grand Campaign.
