About This Game:
EXAPUNKS is a programming puzzle game set in an alternate 1997 filled with underground hackers, hostile corporations, viruses, and networked machines. Players take the role of a hacker who must complete increasingly complicated jobs using small software agents known as EXAs.

The game teaches its fictional assembly-like programming language through an in-game magazine before challenging players to create their own solutions. There is rarely only one correct program, encouraging optimization around speed, size, or activity.

How the Gameplay Works
Players write instructions that tell EXAs how to move between network nodes, copy or manipulate files, communicate with one another, perform calculations, and interact with hardware. Programs are then executed so the player can observe where the logic succeeds or fails.

Later puzzles demand coordination between several EXAs and require more efficient use of limited space or communication. Completed solutions can be compared against performance histograms, encouraging players to redesign working programs simply to make them better.
