Grand Theft Auto 2 is a top-down open-world action game set in a futuristic urban area known as Anywhere City. Players take control of Claude Speed, a criminal trying to build a reputation by working for several rival gangs spread across different parts of the city. Each gang offers its own missions, enemies, and rewards, but helping one organization can damage the player’s relationship with another, making reputation an important part of deciding which jobs to accept.
The game keeps the freedom and criminal activities of the original Grand Theft Auto while expanding the world with more gangs, vehicles, weapons, police responses, and mission variety. Players can freely steal cars, explore city streets, attack rival gangs, complete jobs, or simply cause chaos between missions. Anywhere City is divided into multiple districts that become progressively more dangerous as the player advances.
How the Gameplay Works
Players view the action from an overhead perspective and move around the city on foot or by stealing vehicles. Missions are accepted from ringing telephones connected to different gangs and can involve assassinations, vehicle theft, deliveries, destruction, escapes, and attacks against rival organizations. Completing jobs increases money and usually improves respect with the gang that provided the mission.
Gang relationships can change depending on the player’s actions, so attacking members of one faction may improve standing with their enemies while making that gang more hostile. Criminal activity also attracts law enforcement, with the wanted level increasing as more serious offenses are committed. Higher wanted levels bring stronger police units and eventually heavily armed forces. Players can collect weapons, armor, health, and other pickups while exploring, and vehicles can be repaired, repainted, or equipped with useful upgrades at certain locations.
