HeXen: Beyond Heretic is a dark fantasy first-person action game set in the realm of Cronos. The world has fallen under the influence of Korax, the second of the powerful Serpent Riders, leaving three surviving heroes to fight through corrupted settlements, elemental regions, fortresses, and supernatural dimensions.
Players can choose a Fighter, Cleric, or Mage, and each class has its own strengths, weapons, and approach to combat. The game also expands beyond straightforward corridor progression with large interconnected hubs where actions in one location can unlock routes or mechanisms elsewhere.
How the Gameplay Works
The Fighter relies heavily on close-range weapons and physical strength, the Cleric combines martial and magical tools, while the Mage specializes in ranged magical attacks. Each class discovers different weapons even when exploring the same levels.
Players travel between areas through hub portals, search for keys and switches, solve environmental puzzles, collect mana, and fight undead creatures and other corrupted enemies. Returning to earlier areas is frequently required after activating mechanisms elsewhere in the hub.
