The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King is an action game built around the large battles and final stages of the War of the Ring. It follows several heroes from the film trilogy as they fight through locations such as Minas Tirith, the Paths of the Dead, Cirith Ungol, and the approach to Mount Doom.
The game expands on the combat-focused design of The Two Towers with more playable heroes, branching mission paths, character progression, and cooperative play. Large numbers of Orcs, Uruk-hai, and other enemies make many levels feel like continuous battlefield encounters.
How the Gameplay Works
Players fight using quick attacks, stronger attacks, ranged weapons, blocks, parries, and character-specific special moves. Defeating enemies and performing effective combinations increases the player’s combat rating and earns experience that can be spent on additional skills.
Three major story paths follow different groups of heroes before eventually reaching the final missions. Many stages can also be played cooperatively, allowing two players to fight through the campaign together while developing their chosen characters.
