Luxor 4: Quest for the Afterlife is a color-matching puzzle game that takes the series beyond Egypt and sends players on a journey across the ancient Silk Road. The story revolves around Queen Nefertiti, whose tomb has been raided and sacred artifacts scattered across different lands. Players follow the trail of the thieves while recovering pieces of stolen treasures and helping restore the objects needed for Nefertiti to complete her journey into the afterlife.
The game keeps the familiar Luxor sphere-shooting formula while introducing new locations, additional game modes, artifact collecting, and story progression. Players travel through six different regions, complete increasingly difficult stages, collect Ankh coins, and assemble artifacts from pieces found during the adventure. Alongside traditional levels, special challenges such as River, Onslaught, Battle, and Puzzle modes change the normal rules and provide more variety.
How the Gameplay Works
Players control a winged scarab launcher positioned near the bottom of the screen and fire colored spheres into moving chains. Matching three or more spheres of the same color removes them from the track, while chain reactions can clear additional groups when matching colors reconnect. The main objective is to eliminate enough spheres and prevent the moving chains from reaching the pyramid at the end of the path.
Different stages introduce new challenges beyond standard sphere matching. River Mode places obstacles between the player and the advancing scarab, while Onslaught Mode adds statues that interfere with the normal path. Battle Mode creates a competitive tug-of-war style encounter where matches help push a treasure toward the player’s side. Puzzle Mode removes the moving chains and instead gives players a limited number of spheres to clear a fixed arrangement, while Free Play allows previously discovered levels to be replayed in Classic or Endless variations.
