Mass Effect 1 is a science-fiction action RPG that introduces Commander Shepard and the struggle against a threat tied to the ancient Reapers. After becoming the first human Spectre, Shepard travels across the galaxy pursuing rogue agent Saren while building a crew from several alien species.
The game blends cinematic conversations, squad relationships, planetary exploration, equipment management, and real-time combat with RPG statistics. Major dialogue decisions can shape later events and carry forward into subsequent games.
How the Gameplay Works
Players control Shepard in third-person battles while issuing commands to two squadmates. Weapons, biotic powers, tech abilities, shields, armor, and class skills create different combat approaches, while overheating replaces conventional ammunition for most firearms.
The Normandy provides a hub for speaking with companions and traveling between star systems. Many planets can be explored with the Mako vehicle for side assignments, resources, abandoned facilities, and encounters beyond the main story.
