Mortal Kombat 4 moved the long-running fighting series into 3D-rendered arenas while retaining the brutal one-on-one matches, special moves, and finishing attacks associated with earlier games. Its story centers on the fallen Elder God Shinnok and Quan Chi, with Earthrealm’s fighters attempting to stop another major threat.
The roster combines returning characters such as Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Liu Kang, Raiden, and Johnny Cage with fighters introduced around this chapter of the series. Weapons also became a more visible part of combat, giving characters another option beyond punches, kicks, throws, and signature special attacks.
How the Gameplay Works
Players fight across rounds using directional movement, normal attacks, special move commands, throws, and combo strings. The 3D presentation allows limited sidestepping around attacks, although the core structure remains closer to classic Mortal Kombat than to fully free-moving 3D fighters.
Characters can draw weapons during a match and use them for additional attacks, while stage boundaries and environmental hazards add variety to certain arenas. Winning the final round creates the opportunity to perform Fatalities, continuing the series’ emphasis on character-specific finishing moves.
