Retrace the Light is a futuristic 2.5D action RPG and adventure built around the ability to return instantly to previously occupied positions. Set in the year 3323, the story follows Enforcer Decem, an agent working within the Meta Mirror Project, a system created by humanity and the super-intelligence Primus to enter troubled minds and repair extreme emotional instability.
Decem explores strange mental environments known as Mirrormazes, where memories, emotions, architecture, and hostile creatures become intertwined. After a disastrous mission leaves the Enforcer injured and without important memories, uncovering the truth behind both Decem’s past and the Meta Mirror Project becomes an increasingly important part of the journey.
How the Gameplay Works
The central Retrace ability records spatial positions that Decem can return to later. During combat it can be used to reposition behind enemies, avoid attacks, or create unexpected attack routes. The same mechanic is incorporated into exploration and environmental puzzles, requiring players to consider where they have previously moved rather than simply traveling forward.
Combat includes close-range attacks, counters, charged techniques, and abilities modified through Modules. Bosses provide Primary Modules while Secondary Modules can be discovered while exploring, allowing builds centered on different combat strategies. Mirrormazes contain hidden paths and puzzles, while story decisions involving Decem’s companions can eventually influence which ending is reached.
