Risk of Rain is a 2D action roguelike where survivors of a crashed cargo ship fight through a hostile alien planet while searching for a way to escape. The defining pressure comes from a difficulty system that continuously rises with time, meaning spending too long gathering equipment makes later enemies substantially more dangerous.
Every run begins with a relatively weak survivor but can develop into an extremely powerful build through dozens of stackable items. Different playable survivors have unique attacks and abilities, making movement, positioning, and item priorities change significantly between characters.
How the Gameplay Works
Players explore large 2D stages while defeating enemies for money and locating the teleporter. Money opens chests and other containers containing passive or active items. Because most passive items stack, collecting repeated copies can amplify their effects throughout a run.
Activating the teleporter begins a timed event and summons a boss while additional enemies continue spawning. Surviving allows progression to the next stage. New survivors, items, and artifacts become available by completing specific challenges across multiple runs.
