Sherlock Holmes: Crimes and Punishments is a detective adventure that places players in control of Sherlock Holmes across a collection of separate criminal investigations. Cases involve murders, disappearances, theft, and other mysteries that require careful observation rather than simply following a fixed chain of clues. Dr. Watson and other familiar characters also appear throughout the investigations.
A major part of the game is deciding what the evidence actually means. Several suspects may appear convincing, and players can sometimes reach an incorrect conclusion if clues are interpreted badly. Even after identifying a culprit, Holmes can choose how that person should be treated, adding a moral decision to the conclusion of each case.
How the Gameplay Works
Players investigate crime scenes, examine bodies and objects, interview witnesses, and use Holmes’ observation abilities to notice small details. Clues are recorded and can be connected inside a deduction system, allowing different theories to be formed as the investigation develops.
Some mysteries include scientific experiments, disguises, lock puzzles, reconstructions, and searches for hidden evidence. Once enough information has been collected, players choose the person they believe is responsible and decide whether to condemn or absolve them. Cases can therefore end differently depending on the conclusions reached.
