Silent Hunter III is a World War II submarine simulation that places players in command of a German U-boat during the Battle of the Atlantic. Rather than presenting isolated action missions, its dynamic campaign follows patrol after patrol as the war develops and the naval situation changes over time.
Players manage navigation, detection, torpedo attacks, crew assignments, repairs, and survival while hunting merchant shipping and avoiding destroyers or aircraft. Realism settings can be adjusted so newcomers can automate difficult systems while experienced players handle calculations themselves.
How the Gameplay Works
Patrols begin by leaving port and traveling toward assigned sectors. Contacts can be detected through lookouts, hydrophones, radio reports, or visual observation. Successful attacks require identifying ships, estimating their course and speed, and positioning the submarine for a torpedo solution.
After attacking, players may need to dive deeply and remain silent while escorts use sonar and depth charges. Surviving patrols earns renown that can improve the U-boat and crew, while experienced crew members become more effective at their assigned stations.
