Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones is a dark role-playing game inspired by the works of H. P. Lovecraft. The city of Arkham has been pulled into a nightmare realm, and the player creates a troubled survivor who searches for answers while dealing with cults, monsters, desperate citizens, and forces that challenge both physical survival and sanity.
The game is intentionally bleak and places role-playing choices above heroic power growth. Character background, belief system, skills, companions, and mental condition affect conversations and available solutions, while many encounters can be avoided, negotiated through, or approached with knowledge rather than violence.
How the Gameplay Works
Exploration takes place through side-view locations filled with characters, clues, items, and quests. Combat is turn-based and uses positioning, firearms, melee weapons, spells, consumables, and companion actions. Ammunition and other supplies are limited enough that fighting every enemy can be costly.
Angst and sanity-related effects can influence a character as disturbing events accumulate. Experience is tied strongly to completing objectives and role-playing rather than simply defeating enemies, encouraging investigation and non-combat solutions. Occult knowledge, crafting, and unusual items provide additional tools.
