To the Moon is a story-driven adventure game about two doctors, Eva Rosalene and Neil Watts, who use advanced technology to enter the memories of dying patients and give them the experience of fulfilling a final wish. Their latest patient is Johnny Wyles, an elderly man whose last request is simple but unusual: he wants to go to the moon. The problem is that Johnny cannot explain why this dream is so important to him, leaving the doctors to search through his past for an answer.
The journey gradually moves backward through Johnny’s life, revealing important moments involving his childhood, relationships, regrets, and his wife River. Rather than focusing on combat or character building, the game is centered almost entirely around storytelling, exploration, dialogue, music, and small puzzles. As the doctors alter connections within Johnny’s memories, new details about his life are uncovered and the reason behind his final wish slowly becomes clearer.
How the Gameplay Works
Players control Eva and Neil while exploring different periods of Johnny’s memories from a top-down perspective. Each memory contains people, objects, and locations connected to important events in his life. Players interact with these surroundings and collect memory links that are needed to activate special objects known as mementos, which allow the doctors to move farther backward into Johnny’s past.
Activating a memento usually involves completing a small tile-based puzzle before progressing to the next memory. The game contains no traditional combat system, equipment management, or complicated character statistics, keeping most of the attention on discovering Johnny’s story. Exploration is largely linear, with conversations, flashbacks, environmental details, and occasional humorous interactions between Eva and Neil connecting each chapter of the journey.
