Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Island Thunder expands the tactical military action of the original Ghost Recon with a new campaign set in Cuba. The Ghosts are deployed as political instability and armed conflict threaten the country’s future, placing the elite unit into a series of operations against hostile forces. The campaign continues the series’ emphasis on careful planning, realistic weapons, and dangerous firefights where a small mistake can quickly cost a soldier.
New environments, missions, weapons, and multiplayer content extend the original experience while retaining its methodical approach to infantry combat. Rather than encouraging constant run-and-gun action, Island Thunder rewards players who scout the battlefield, coordinate squads, and engage enemies from favorable positions.
How the Gameplay Works
Before each mission, players choose soldiers, organize fireteams, select weapons, and prepare equipment for the objectives ahead. During operations, different teams can be given movement and engagement orders through the command interface. Players can directly control a soldier while the remaining units follow their assigned instructions.
Combat is highly lethal, so using cover, maintaining distance, and approaching enemy positions carefully is usually safer than rushing forward. Missions can involve reconnaissance, rescue operations, eliminating enemy forces, securing locations, and other military objectives. Soldiers who survive can gain experience, making the loss of veteran team members particularly costly during a longer campaign.
