Torment: Tides of Numenera is a narrative-heavy RPG set in the Ninth World, a far-future Earth built over the remains of countless advanced civilizations. Players control the Last Castoff, a discarded body once inhabited by the immortal Changing God, whose abandoned creations are being hunted by an entity known as the Sorrow.
The game places unusual situations, philosophical questions, and character choices ahead of constant combat. Conversations can resolve major conflicts, and failure during a skill check often creates a new consequence rather than simply forcing the player to reload.
How the Gameplay Works
Players explore isometric environments, recruit companions, investigate ancient technology, and select dialogue responses based on personality, skills, and available Effort. Character abilities draw from stat pools that are also used to increase the chance of succeeding at difficult tasks.
When direct conflict occurs, the game enters turn-based Crisis encounters. These battles often contain interactive objectives or alternate solutions beyond killing every opponent, allowing movement, conversation, devices, and environmental actions to influence the outcome.
