About This Game:
Alan Wake’s American Nightmare is a supernatural third-person action game that places writer Alan Wake inside a twisted reality resembling an episode of the fictional television show Night Springs. Trapped in Arizona, Alan must confront Mr. Scratch, a dangerous double who represents a darker version of himself. The story combines mystery, horror, and action as Alan attempts to change events by finding and rewriting parts of the reality around him.

Compared with the original Alan Wake, American Nightmare places greater emphasis on combat while retaining the series’ light-versus-darkness mechanics. Desert roads, motels, an observatory, a drive-in theater, and other locations become part of a repeating supernatural scenario that Alan must gradually understand and manipulate.

How the Gameplay Works
Enemies known as the Taken are protected by darkness, preventing normal weapons from damaging them effectively at first. Players aim Alan’s flashlight at an enemy to burn away this protection before finishing the target with firearms. Batteries restore flashlight energy, while ammunition and weapons can be found in supply boxes and other locations throughout the environment.

The story is structured around a repeating time loop, with Alan revisiting locations and changing specific details in an attempt to produce a different outcome. Manuscript pages provide story information and can also help unlock weapon cases. Alongside the campaign, the Arcade Action mode places Alan in survival arenas where increasingly dangerous waves of Taken must be defeated until morning arrives.
