ARMA: Cold War Assault is a military tactical shooter originally known as Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis. Set during a fictional Cold War conflict in 1985, the campaign follows soldiers caught in a widening confrontation after Soviet forces begin attacking islands occupied or supported by Western forces.
The game is known for much larger battlefields and more realistic military behavior than traditional run-and-gun shooters. Infantry combat is joined by armored vehicles, helicopters, aircraft, and command elements, allowing missions to move between several different roles during the campaign.
How the Gameplay Works
Players move through large outdoor environments where enemies can engage from significant distances. Firearms are dangerous, health is limited, and rushing toward enemy positions without using terrain or cover can quickly end a mission. Weapons, ammunition, and equipment must therefore be handled more carefully than in an arcade shooter.
Some missions put the player in command of small squads, while others involve tanks, helicopters, or different military responsibilities. Objectives range from patrols and assaults to defensive operations and reconnaissance, with the open terrain often allowing several approaches to the same battlefield situation.
