About This Game:
Hotline Miami is a top-down action game set in a surreal version of 1980s Miami. Players control a mysterious masked man who receives strange telephone messages directing him toward buildings filled with armed criminals. What initially appears to be a sequence of violent assignments gradually develops into a more confusing story involving memory, identity, and unreliable events.

The game combines extremely fast combat with instant restarts, encouraging repeated attempts at the same level until a successful route is found. Enemies and the player can be defeated very quickly, making positioning, timing, weapon choice, and awareness more important than simply absorbing damage.

How the Gameplay Works
Each level is viewed from above and contains rooms filled with enemies carrying melee weapons or firearms. Players can punch, use knives and blunt weapons, throw objects, pick up guns, and quickly move between targets. Doors can also be used to knock enemies down before finishing them or moving to another threat.

Death usually sends the player back to the beginning of the current section almost instantly, making experimentation quick. Different animal masks provide gameplay bonuses such as improved abilities or altered starting conditions. Scores are awarded according to speed, aggression, combos, and the methods used to clear each level.
